His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, Prof. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb received today, Sunday, at Al-Azhar, His Excellency Dr. Mamadou Tangara, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Gambia, to discuss ways to enhance Al-Azhar's religious and educational support for the people of Gambia.
During the meeting, His Eminence the Grand Imam affirmed the depth of the relationship between Al-Azhar and Gambia. He pointed out Al-Azhar's readiness to increase scholarships allocated to Gambians studying at Al-Azhar, in a manner that meets the needs of Gambian society. He also stated that Al-Azhar is prepared to train Gambian imams at the Al-Azhar Academy for Training Imams and Preachers, to hone their skills in dealing with contemporary issues related to Islam's approach to coexistence, dealing with others, women in Islam, and other issues that extremist groups exploit to distort the image of this true religion.
The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar stressed that the Palestinian people have been subjected to the worst genocide and ethnic cleansing for nearly two years, and have been left alone to face their fate amid unprecedented international inaction and weakness. His Eminence pointed out that the Zionist entity has committed the most heinous massacres in modern history, killing innocent children, women, the elderly, and the youth, and destroying hospitals, mosques, churches, and schools. His Eminence declared, “This entity has proven that it is against humanity.”
The Gambian Foreign Minister, for his part, expressed his happiness at meeting the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, and his appreciation for his efforts in spreading the correct image of Islam, and his country’s appreciation for the efforts made by Al-Azhar to serve the people of Gambia. He stated, “I thank you for the great support you provide to the people of Gambia who study at Al-Azhar and in our country, through Al-Azhar Center for Teaching the Arabic Language, which we inaugurated, and from which 60 students have graduated.”
Mr. Tangara explained that Gambians are looking forward to studying at Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, given its high standing among the people of Gambia. He praised the wisdom of His Eminence the Grand Imam, his recommendations, and his significant role in promoting Islam and its true moderate approach to various issues. He added, “You can consider me an ambassador of Al-Azhar in Gambia and in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which we currently chair. We thank you for increasing the number of Gambian students and for the proposal to train Gambian imams at Al-Azhar. I will follow up on this matter upon my return to Gambia.”
