Al-Azhar Grand Imam mourns his brother, Pope Francis: A man of exceptional humanity
His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, Prof. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, mourned his brother in humanity, Pope Francis, Pope of the Catholic Church, who passed away today, Monday, after a life journey that was dedicated to serving humanity, championing the causes of the vulnerable, and promoting dialogue between different religions and cultures.
The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar affirms that Pope Francis was a humanitarian icon of the highest caliber, sparing no effort in serving the message of humanity. The relationship between Al-Azhar and the Vatican has evolved during his tenure, beginning with His Holiness' attendance at Al-Azhar International Peace Conference in 2017 and continuing with the signing of the historic Document on Human Fraternity in 2019, which would not have been possible without sincere intentions, despite the challenges and difficulties surrounding it. He also notes that other meetings and joint projects have expanded significantly over the past years, contributing to advancing Islamic-Christian dialogue.
The Grand Imam remembers Pope Francis for his commitment to strengthening relations with Al-Azhar and the Islamic world, through his visits to numerous Islamic and Arab countries, and through his views that have demonstrated fairness and humanity, particularly regarding the aggression on Gaza and confronting abhorrent Islamophobia.
The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar extends his sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the followers of the Catholic Church around the world and to the family of His Holiness Pope Francis, wishing them patience and solace.
