Al-Azhar Grand Imam and the Minister of Education stress the need to instill religious and moral values through schools and curricula
The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and the Minister of Education discuss the inclusion of the Human Fraternity Document in educational curricula.
His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, Prof. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, received Mr. Mohamed Abdel Latif, the Minister of Education, to discuss ways to enhance cooperation.
During the meeting, the Grand Imam stressed the necessity of instilling religious and moral values, promoting pride in identity, and reviving the authentic traditions we were raised on, such as the love of reading and learning, and connecting the young and the youth to our heritage, cultural and civilizational roots, and ancient history. This should be done through simplified educational curricula that facilitates the receipt of information and the sustainability of knowledge, in light of this flood of cultural invasion that is trying to uproot the minds of our sons and daughters, separate them from the reality of their homeland and nation, and exclude the system of values and morals from the lives of the young and the youth, through modern technological means that invade their minds without supervision.
Minister Mohamed Abdel Latif, for his part, affirmed the Ministry's commitment to developing students' moral character and combining it with the pursuit of knowledge and learning. He emphasized the Ministry's approach to restoring schools to their role as educational institutions that work to raise and educate students properly, and to protect them against extremist ideas and the tendency to alienate their identity, which is intensively targeting them.
The Grand Imam and the Minister of Education also discussed the inclusion of the historic Human Fraternity Document, which he signed with His Holiness Pope Francis in 2019, into pre-university education curricula. His Eminence emphasized the importance of the document's provisions in disseminating the values of coexistence and fraternity and fostering a culture of respect for others. Abdel Latif welcomed the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar's proposal, stressing the need to study how to incorporate the texts of this historic document and make the most of it.
